Storm Lake Scholars Program
This is a need-based scholarship for first-year, first-generation college students from Storm Lake Senior High School in Storm Lake, Iowa. For consideration, students must apply for admission to the University of Iowa, complete the scholarship application on the Iowa Scholarship Portal and submit the FAFSA by February 1 of their senior year of high school. The online application consists of an essay question and providing the name of a person (teacher, counselor or mentor) who can provide a letter of recommendation on the student’s behalf.
To reiterate, you must be a graduate of Storm Lake Senior High School to be considered for this scholarship.
This scholarship is renewable for an additional three years or until a bachelor’s degree is conferred (whichever comes first). The following requirements must be met to maintain eligibility:
*Be a first-generation college student (neither parent obtained a 4-year college degree);
*Demonstrate financial need;
*Be a graduate of Storm Lake Senior High School;
*File the FAFSA each year by the filing deadline, if eligible for federal aid (DACA and undocumented students should contact Financial Aid directly at 319-335-1450);
*Maintain continuous, full-time enrollment and a minimum 2.0 University of Iowa cumulative GPA;
*Attend required monthly meetings with the Storm Lake Scholars Program Coordinator and Faculty Advisor; and
*Become an active member of the TRIO Student Support Services Program, if eligible.

- Please provide a brief written summary regarding your plans/ability to adhere to scholarship and program guidelines and what you hope to gain from being part of the Storm Lake Scholars Program at the University of Iowa.
- Letter of Recommendation Request: Please provide the name and email address for one individual affiliated with your high school (teacher or counselor) who can provide a recommendation on your behalf. Make sure you have the person’s full name and correct e-mail address.
Once the reference name and email address is entered and you click “Save and Keep Editing” or “Finish and Submit”, an e-mail will be automatically sent to the individual completing your recommendation. That e-mail will contain the correct information on how to complete the recommendation. Please notify this person ahead of time to expect an email from us.
After entering your reference information, we recommend that you check back on the portal to ensure that the reference has completed the recommendation by the scholarship deadline of 2/15/24. You can check the status by clicking on the “References” tab located at the top center of the portal screen.

• You (Applicants) are not able to view the information submitted by the reference.
• If you decide to change the reference after an email has already been sent to the original reference, please contact the individual and inform them that the recommendation is no longer needed.
